Kaiken Wines

Let’s meet the new Aventura Malbec Collection ~

Coming from some of the highest altitudes in Argentina, Kaiken Wines have just introduced their newest trio of micro-region specific Malbecs, the Aventura collection.

Influenced by the Caiquén, a wild goose that flies across the Andes mountains between Chile and Argentina, founder Aurelio Montes (who similarly made several trips between the two countries), was inspired by the land and people of Mendoza.  He subsequently founded Kaiken Wines in 2001.

Stemming from their love of exploration, the Aventura collection features a trio of Malbecs from three distinct terroirs, all exhibiting unique expressions of Mendoza’s Andes.  They are fermented and aged in concrete, which brings out the primary fruit character without oak influence.

The Malbec I’m highlighting today is the Los Chacayes Sur.  The Los Chacayes Sur vineyard is located 4,000 ft (above sea level) in the famed Uco Valley and is comprised of large stones of various shapes and sizes alongside the Arroyo Grande, a stream that flows down the mountain.  This high elevation contributes to the higher acid that balances the fuller body Malbec is known for.

With notes of red and black fruits (blackberry, blueberry, red plum) and lifted aromatics of wild herbs (thyme and mint), flint, and peppery spice, this Malbec would be a great pairing companion with a variety of foods like lamb, bison, ostrich, and lean cuts of beef.  Alternatively, it also pairs great with blue cheese!

Besides producing delicious wines, Kaiken carries a strong value of conservation in its vineyards and winery practices.  From water conservation and biodiversity in the vineyards to efficient use of electric energy and waste management, Kaiken believes in decreasing its carbon footprint AND being socially responsible for our planet.

The Aventura collection has just arrived in the US and I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce them to you!
